Curatorial notes
Richard Earlom created this print, "Landscape with Travelers Crossing a Bridge at Sunset," using etching and mezzotint. It’s after a painting by Claude Lorrain, a famous French artist from the 1600s. This print was made in England in the late 1700s. During this time, there was a growing market for reproductions of famous paintings. Earlom’s print brings Lorrain's classical landscape to a wider audience. Notice the travelers on the bridge. And look at the classical building on the hill. These elements suggest an idealized vision of the past. But this image also reflects the social structures of its time. Printmaking was becoming a major industry, and images like this circulated widely. To understand this work better, we can consult historical records about the print market in 18th-century England. We might also consider the role of institutions like the Royal Academy in shaping artistic tastes. The meaning of art is always shaped by its social and institutional context.
