Roland og Olivers tvekamp
Listen to curator's interpretation
Curatorial notes
Niels Skovgaard made this drawing of Roland and Oliver's duel with pencil on paper. Skovgaard's choice of material speaks volumes. Pencil, a humble blend of graphite and clay, allows for both precision and easy erasure. Note the visible under-drawing, ghostlike beneath the darker, confident lines that define the figures. This reveals Skovgaard’s process: a careful dance between initial conception and final form. The materiality and skilled application of this drawing reflect a moment of artistic exploration. It invites us to consider the relationship between intention and execution, labor and skill, and the potential of simple materials to convey complex narratives. It blurs the line between sketch and finished work, prompting us to value the process of creation.
