Károly Escher created this photograph titled Corso. Note how rows of seated figures evoke both spectatorship and regimentation. This is an ancient dance between the individual and the crowd. One could draw a line from this image to Renaissance festival scenes, where the corso, or parade, was a riotous spectacle. Here, however, the mood is more subdued. We are reminded of the power of collective identity, as the dark mass of the crowd dominates. Consider also the motif of spectatorship found in theatre boxes or coliseums, echoing humanity's enduring fascination with watching, being watched, and being part of something larger. The artist’s use of a high vantage point further emphasizes the distance and detachment from the emotions of the crowd. This photograph is a modern take on the age-old human drama of collective experience, and we feel both drawn to and distanced from its spectacle. The visual and symbolic impact of such images transcends time.
