Curator: Standing before us, we have Claes Oldenburg’s "Soft Drainpipe - Blue (Cool) Version," a playfully subversive take on everyday objects. Editor: It looks like a deflated superhero costume. A bit sad, actually, and droopy. Curator: Exactly! Oldenburg challenges our perception of the mundane. This drainpipe, typically rigid and functional, is rendered soft and pliable through the use of canvas. Editor: I find it fascinating how he elevates commonplace industrial forms using traditional art materials. It makes you think about mass production versus handcraftsmanship. Curator: It's as if he's asking, "What if the things that control our lives were as malleable as our imaginations?" He lets us laugh at the systems we built. Editor: Indeed! It’s a humorous twist to see this drainpipe humbled into a soft object. Food for thought on the processes of both decay and design.

An advertisement for a drainpipe was the source for this work. Like many of Oldenburg's sculptures, it renders a familiar object strange through its recreation in surprising materials and colours. The transformation of hard into soft objects is a recurrent theme in his sculpture. Adjusting the pulley can alter the appearance and dimensions of the work, producing a variety of shapes that suggest a crucified figure, an elephant's trunk and ears, or male genitalia.
