Pierre Frédéric Lehnert created this etching called Studie van een kudde schapen bij een hek which translates to "Study of a flock of sheep near a fence." Lehnert produced this pastoral image during the height of the Industrial Revolution. The image freezes a moment of agrarian life, as the sheep rest near a fence, seemingly untouched by the sweeping changes reshaping society. During this period, the art world was changing as well. Artists began to break from academic traditions, with some seeking to depict modern life. Yet, here, Lehnert lingers on a traditional subject of rural tranquility. We might consider this artwork as a comment on the value of nature and the slower rhythms of agricultural life. What emotions does this scene evoke in you? Does it represent an escape, a return to simpler times? Or is it simply an idyllic image, detached from the realities of the era?
