This Man's Jacket, made by a Hmong artist, probably out of cotton, is a marvel of process! You can see this in the way the colors are woven together. It's almost like the jacket was constructed by someone thinking out loud, each stitch a tiny idea, a variation on a theme. There's something so tactile about the jacket's surface, I imagine. The dark fabric of the jacket body is such a contrast to the bright, patterned sleeves. I keep coming back to the stitches that create the patterned bands on the sleeves. Each one is different, and when you add them all up it’s like a whole language emerges! It's not just about the image they create, but the feeling of the thread, the slight irregularities, the human touch. I am reminded of the quilts made by the Gee’s Bend quilters – there’s a similar sense of freedom, invention, and improvisation. We should remember that art isn't just about a final product but about the journey, the exploration, and the conversation between the artist and the material.
