Alfred Freddy Krupa made this photograph, "Morning at the equestrian club," without specifying the date, but it feels very now. It's rendered in soft greyscale, a decision which, for me, really heightens the emotional impact. Look at the horse at the left – the way it seems to almost dissolve into the background. There’s something so vulnerable and transient about its presence. The texture here is key. The graininess of the photograph gives the whole scene an ethereal quality, like a memory fading at the edges. You can almost feel the cold, damp air of early morning. This piece reminds me of Gerhard Richter’s blurred photographs-turned-paintings. Both artists are interested in the ways images can both reveal and conceal. It's about embracing the unresolved, the ambiguous, and finding beauty in the process of seeing.
