This photo by Alfred Freddy Krupa seems to be built out of soft, blended layers of black and white. I can imagine the artist waking up early to capture the scene, the sun barely up over the horizon. The scene is atmospheric, the fog lifting to reveal a group of horses. I can almost feel the cool dampness of the morning air, see the breath of the horses as it fogs up in the cold. The texture is soft and blurred, like a dream barely remembered. Krupa captures a moment of quiet beauty, a fleeting glimpse into the lives of these animals. The simplicity of the composition reminds me of some of Gerhard Richter's early grey paintings. Both artists are interested in capturing a sense of reality, but also in the limitations of representation. The horses are not sharply defined, but rather emerge from the fog, like half-formed thoughts. These artists are engaged in conversation, adding their voices to the ongoing dialogue about how we see and interpret the world.
