This is a book, made by Cornelis Rudolphus Theodorus Krayenhoff, sometime between 1814 and 1827, of paper and board. As a bound object, this book represents a significant investment of labor. Consider the transformation of plant fiber into paper, the typesetting and printing of text, and the binding, all requiring specialized tools and highly skilled hands. The labor of these processes directly speaks to the cultural and social context in which it was made. This book gives us some insight into the military, and particularly the engineers, during the period. It's worth thinking about who would have commissioned it, who used it, and who made it: what did each of these groups bring to the equation? Paying attention to materials, processes, and the social context in which this book was made helps us to understand its full meaning, challenging any distinction between fine art and craft.
