Takashi Murakami made "Me and Kaikai and Kiki" with what looks like screen printing or maybe digital printing, and it's all about making art that’s a process, a factory even. The surface is super flat, intensely colored, with no brushstrokes or smudges. It's so smooth, it almost feels like you could eat it. The colors are bright, like candy. There's a sea of smiling flowers in every shade imaginable. Look at the detail, each face is slightly different, some have closed eyes, some have their tongue out! The artist's avatar, Kaikai and Kiki float on top of this background, each of them has got the same happy expression. Murakami's work reminds me of Warhol, or maybe even a more manic version of Disney! Both artists are interested in the way we produce images and stories, and their relation to the culture at large. But really, art is like a conversation, always open to new interpretations, and never truly finished.
