Jacob de Wit created "Studieblad met vijf koppen", or "Study Sheet with Five Heads," using pen and brown ink, around the 18th century during the Dutch Golden Age. At first glance, these sketches might seem like simple studies, yet, these meticulously rendered faces offer a glimpse into the social and cultural values of the period. De Wit's study reflects the era's emphasis on classical ideals and the human form, but it also subtly reinforces the social hierarchy. The faces, predominantly male and seemingly wise or contemplative, suggest the period's reverence for masculinity and intellectual authority. The single image of a child, perhaps a cherubic figure, reminds us of the era's complex relationship with innocence and vulnerability. De Wit invites us to consider not just the aesthetic qualities of the artwork, but also its role in shaping and reflecting the societal norms of its time.
