Curatorial notes
Perino del Vaga made this pen and brown ink with brown wash and white gouache on gray-brown paper drawing of Saints Peter and John Healing a Cripple at the Gate of the Temple in sixteenth-century Italy. Religious images were carefully regulated in Italy at this time. Here, the artist depicts a story from the Book of Acts in which Saints Peter and John heal a man who has been lame from birth. Note the classical architecture in the background, a standard trope in Italian Renaissance art that evokes the grandeur of ancient Rome and its institutions. The strong diagonal lines and dramatic gestures create a sense of movement and energy, emphasizing the miraculous nature of the event. To understand the artistic choices made by del Vaga, we would need to research the Counter-Reformation, an institutional effort by the Catholic Church to respond to the Protestant Reformation and to regulate artistic production. Images like this one played a key role in reaffirming the Church's authority and promoting its message.
