Albert Levone made this watercolor and graphite rendering of a Pennsylvania German butter mold. These molds, used to decorate butter, were common in the Pennsylvania German communities. The image creates meaning through its visual codes, such as the eagle. As a national symbol, the eagle may comment on the social structures of its time, specifically, by suggesting patriotic feelings. The radiating lines and borders may reference other cultural forms with symbolic meanings. Such an image can be properly understood only if we have resources available for understanding its historical associations. Research into cookbooks, and local historical society records will all contribute to a richer understanding of butter molds. That will help us understand this artwork better, as something contingent on its social and institutional context.
