Christo's ‘Air Package, Project for the Garden of the Museum of Modern Art, New York City’ looks like a model made of mixed media, like a quirky proposal waiting to happen. The muted grey of the base is so still, so architectural, and then BAM, there’s this translucent, crumpled sphere held together by a web of twine, defying gravity. It’s the kind of tension you feel when you see a rough sketch evolve into a polished piece. Think of it as a painter's underpainting, still visible beneath the surface of the finished piece. I love how the twine both conceals and reveals, creating these lines that crisscross, hinting at what's inside. It's soft, it’s puffy, it's weird, it’s like a cloud that crash-landed in MoMA’s garden. It reminds me of the work of Claes Oldenburg, who also embraced the idea of art as playful and oversized, transforming the mundane into something monumental. Christo’s work invites us to see the world differently.
