Alexander Liberman made this untitled abstract painting with loose brushstrokes and a vibrant colour palette. It's like watching a dance of colours, each one asserting its presence with confidence. Look closely, and you'll notice how the paint seems to have been flung onto the surface, creating a sense of immediacy. The texture is smooth. It seems like Liberman might have used large brushes to create these gestures, allowing the paint to flow and drip. These marks reveal a sense of freedom and spontaneity, as if he was inviting chance into the process. Take for example that thick brown swipe at the centre of the canvas, radiating droplets of paint at either end. I'm reminded of Joan Mitchell. Like her, Liberman allows the painting to unfold organically, embracing ambiguity and resisting fixed interpretations.
