Arequipa, Peru 1948

Robert Frank made this photograph, Arequipa, Peru, most likely with a Leica camera, sometime in the middle of the 20th century. It’s an image of architecture – a church perhaps - rendered in black and white tones that are so subtle they’re like whispers. I think Frank has captured something about the materiality of the place. The stone walls seem to breathe, or maybe they’re exhaling a silent story of time, weather, and history. I can imagine him, feeling his way through the streets, with all its hidden corners.
