This albumen print showing the colonnade of the Temple of Isis on the island of Philae, was created by C. & G. Zangaki. This photograph not only captures the monumental architecture of the temple, but it also provides a glimpse into the colonial gaze of the late 19th century. C. & G. Zangaki, were Greek photographers, who produced countless images of Egypt for European tourists. Notice how the composition frames the temple as an exotic and timeless relic. The play of light and shadow emphasizes the temple's grandeur, yet it also subtly underscores the power dynamics at play. This temple, dedicated to the goddess Isis, was a site of vibrant religious practice for centuries, but here it is presented as a silent, almost empty stage. What stories do these stones hold? What voices are missing from this image? This photograph invites us to consider the complex layers of history, representation, and power that shape our understanding of the past.
