Paulus Lauters created this print called ‘Herder met kudde in een storm’ sometime in the 19th century. The piece depicts a shepherd and his flock amidst an approaching storm, capturing a moment of vulnerability. During the 1800s, the Netherlands, like much of Europe, experienced rapid social and economic changes. Rural life, with its deep connection to the land, was often romanticized, embodying simpler values in contrast to the growing industrialization of urban centers. Lauters' print speaks to this sentiment, evoking a sense of nostalgia for a vanishing way of life. The shepherd, though seemingly in control, is dwarfed by the immensity of the impending storm. The sheep, huddled together, express a sense of fear and vulnerability, mirroring the anxieties of a society undergoing dramatic transformation. What does it mean to face such a storm, both literally and figuratively? How do we find shelter and solace in times of uncertainty? The emotional depth of the piece resonates, reminding us of our shared human experience of facing adversity. It’s a reflection on resilience, and the human, and animal, spirit in the face of overwhelming forces.
