Johann Elias Ridinger made this print, "Kudde schapen en geiten", or "Herd of Sheep and Goats", using etching techniques. Ridinger lived in Germany in the 18th century, a time when Europe’s social structures were still largely defined by feudalism, and rural life was idealized in art. Here, we see a group of sheep and goats clustered together. They appear calm, almost posing, yet the setting is rugged, with rocks, sparse vegetation, and a wrecked boat in the background. This contrast is really interesting, isn't it? It’s as if Ridinger is trying to reconcile the idealized pastoral scene with the realities of rural life. The image evokes the economic value placed on animals, like sheep and goats, and the human labor needed to care for them. The animals are almost like characters in a play, each with its own stance and expression. Ridinger invites us to consider how our relationship with the natural world is mediated by our own cultural and economic needs.
