This round hat box, covered with checkered paper and a green carrying strap, comes to us from Maison de Bonneterie. I'm really curious about the mindset of the person who pasted the paper onto the cardboard, carefully aligning the edges to create a seamless pattern. Did they find it meditative, or maddening? The result is so beautiful and satisfying! The box itself is a simple cylinder, but the checkered pattern gives it a lively, dynamic energy. It makes me think of other artists who worked with grids, like Agnes Martin, but with a playful twist. And that green carrying strap! It reminds me of a painter's gesture, a stroke of color that ties the whole composition together. It seems so unassuming, but it’s also quite elegant. Just like painting, these everyday objects are also a form of embodied expression which embraces ambiguity.
