Alighiero Boetti made this cube, called Cubo, out of different materials. It's a strange object because it is both calculated and random. The wood on the top feels broken and accidental, and there is this strange surface that looks like water damage. The wooden and metallic layers stacked on all sides of the cube create an interesting grid structure. I wonder if Boetti thought about this in his studio, what it might have been like to experiment with these materials. Perhaps he was thinking about Sol LeWitt, who was another artist that was interested in geometric forms, repetition and conceptual art. Ultimately, it's a reminder that artists are always in conversation with each other, riffing on ideas and pushing the boundaries of what art can be. Like a painter, I also embrace ambiguity and uncertainty, allowing for multiple interpretations of a piece.
