Miriam Schapiro created "Asian Rendezvous," a vibrant piece that blends painting and collage. Schapiro was deeply influenced by the Feminist Art Movement, which sought to challenge the male-dominated art world and to validate women's experiences and perspectives. Schapiro, along with other feminist artists, questioned the traditional art historical canon, which often excluded or marginalized women artists. In this context, Schapiro developed what she called "femmage," which combined fabric, collage, and painting. This was her way of elevating women's craft traditions. In "Asian Rendezvous" you can see her femmage technique which intertwines Western and Eastern motifs, referencing the decorative arts of Asia, while mixing in images of flowers, dragons, and mythical creatures in a visually stunning dialogue. Schapiro’s work is about making visible the histories and cultural contributions of women. It's a celebration of cultural exchange through a feminine lens.
