Marc Chagall made ‘Le bouquet de lilas’ with oil on canvas, and you can almost feel the brushstrokes as you look at it. It’s a dreamy world of blues and greens, punctuated by these vibrant pops of red and lilac. I can imagine Chagall, mixing those colors, layer upon layer, building up this fantastical scene. Look how the paint is applied so freely, almost like he’s sculpting with it. The bouquet itself is this explosion of texture and color, but then you notice the bird nestled amongst the blooms, a symbol of freedom, maybe? Or is it a symbol of something else entirely? The way Chagall uses color to create mood is really powerful. The deep blues create a sense of mystery, but then the pops of color bring this feeling of joy. As painters we're always looking at each other's work, riffing off each other's ideas. It’s like one long, ongoing conversation! Painting embraces ambiguity and uncertainty, allowing for multiple interpretations and meaning.
