Bernard Willem Wierink made this ‘Naakte vrouw met spiegel en weegschaal’ (Nude woman with mirror and scales) with etching around 1906. I love the way the process feels so present here; it’s not about hiding the work, but showing it. The color is so subtle and soft, it’s all about layering and texture. You can almost feel the plate and the way the ink sits on the surface. There’s a kind of intimacy in that, like seeing an artist's fingerprints on their work. That one arm raised up to the orb, the way it seems to blend into the ground - that’s where the real juice is. It's almost like Wierink is trying to find a balance, not just in the image, but in the making of it. Thinking about other artists who play with similar ideas, someone like Edvard Munch comes to mind, always wrestling with big themes like life, death, and love. What I love about art is it's never about finding the answer, but about embracing the questions.
