Curatorial notes

Philip Zilcken created this etching titled 'Gezicht op Dordrecht', or 'View of Dordrecht', using black ink on paper. Zilcken came of age during the rise of the Dutch Impressionist movement, and his work often captured everyday life and landscapes en plein air. Here, the skyline of Dordrecht is shrouded in an atmospheric haze; its famous church looms in the background. Up close, docked boats occupy the foreground of the composition. The artist's attention to light and shadow creates a mood that is both serene and melancholic. Zilcken’s impressionistic approach sought to capture the fleeting and subjective experience of the scene. As we consider this image, think about how it invites us to reflect on the passage of time and the interplay between the natural and the built environment. Notice how Zilcken prompts us to meditate on the subtle beauty of ordinary moments.
