This print of the Gerechtshof in Zwolle was made by Antoine Franciscus Cornelis Hoffmann using a lithographic process. Lithography depends on the simple fact that grease and water repel one another. The artist would have drawn directly onto a flat slab of limestone with a greasy crayon, then chemically treated the stone so that ink would adhere only to the drawn areas. The printmaker could then produce multiple impressions of the image. Consider the qualities inherent in lithography: the soft tonality, the velvety blacks, the subtle gradations of light and shadow. All these effects are possible because of the direct contact between the artist’s hand and the stone. In contrast to engraving, which demands rigorous training, lithography opened printmaking to a broader range of artists. It also enabled the rapid reproduction of images, fueling the growth of mass media. Hoffmann's print testifies to lithography's democratization of art, challenging traditional notions of artistic skill and value.
