Curatorial notes

Li Huasheng made this artwork with ink, building up subtle layers of grey and green. You can really see how the process of art-making is so important here. Up close, the surface has this incredible woven texture, not unlike fabric. Each little mark is like a thread in a larger tapestry. I love how this almost monochromatic colour palette allows the texture to speak so loudly. Look at the way the ink pools and settles into the fabric, creating a sense of depth and atmosphere. It reminds me of Agnes Martin's subtle grids, but with a distinctly Eastern sensibility. It's a reminder that art is a conversation, an ongoing exchange of ideas across time and cultures. There's no right way to read this, just different ways of seeing.
