Lodewijk Schelfhout created "Huizen en bomen onder een viaduct te Remouchamps" using pencil and chalk. Schelfhout was working during a period of significant social and political change in Europe. In this artwork, he seems to be grappling with questions of industrialization, nature, and their intersection. The viaduct, a symbol of progress and modernity, looms in the background, while the houses and trees in the foreground assert a different kind of presence. There's a tension between nature and industrialization. The artist invites us to reflect on the impact of human progress on the natural world and on a more intimate, human scale. It invites us to consider the complex relationship between progress and preservation, and the emotional impact of these transformations on our sense of place and belonging.
