This is an orthodox icon of Christ Pantocrator, or “Savior in Power,” made anonymously by Orthodox Icons, an organization which began around 330 AD. The icon presents Christ as both fully human, and fully divine. The production of icons was deeply embedded in the social and political context of the Byzantine Empire. Icons served not only as objects of veneration but also as assertions of religious and cultural identity in a world often marked by conflict and diversity. Looking at this image, you feel the historical and cultural weight of the icon tradition, as well as the tensions of the time. It wasn’t only about painting religious figures, but also about preserving cultural heritage. Despite being created by an organization, the production of this icon involved individual artists. Each artist had their own interpretation, belief, and relationship with the figure they depicted. In this way, the icon also becomes a deeply personal artifact.
