Editor: This is Utagawa Kunisada’s woodblock print, "Actor Iwai Shijaku as Toragaishi in a Soga Brothers play." The actor's costume is very striking. What do you see in the composition? Curator: The composition relies heavily on line and shape. Note how Kunisada uses contrasting patterns and bold colors to create visual interest. The diagonal line of the bow bisects the figure. Editor: The patterns are quite mesmerizing, almost obscuring the actor's figure. Curator: Indeed. Consider, too, the relationship between the flat planes of color and the calligraphic elements. The interplay generates depth and complexity. Are you drawn to anything specific? Editor: I appreciate how Kunisada balances the figure with text so that neither overwhelms the other. I learned a lot! Curator: Likewise. The print is an excellent study in form and balance.
