This exquisite watch was made by James Cox in the 18th century, demonstrating his skill in goldsmithing, gem-setting and horology. The watch’s outer case is a dazzling display of gemstones set in gold, diamonds, rubies, sapphires, and emeralds. Each gem would have been carefully selected, cut, and polished before being individually set into the gold. This precision work demanded skill and time. The watch also contains an elaborate clockwork mechanism of tiny gears, springs and levers. This pocket watch reflects a society deeply invested in the concept of time as a valuable commodity. The immense labor and precious materials would have made it an exclusive symbol of wealth, power and status. It challenges our common perception of what a timepiece can be, transforming a functional object into a miniature objet d'art.
