This Standing Figure was made by a Lulua artist, and it's carved from a single piece of wood. What I find most striking is the directness of the carving. You can really sense the artist engaging with the material, removing wood to reveal the form within. The figure is simplified, but the hands, face, and especially the large feet, are carefully articulated. Look closely, and you’ll see the tool marks, the trace of the maker’s hand. Consider also the social context. Wood carving, like many forms of making, is often overlooked as a medium. Yet, it requires a deep understanding of material properties and techniques passed down through generations. By focusing on the process, we can appreciate the skill and knowledge embedded in this Standing Figure, and move beyond conventional ideas about art and craft.
