This is a page from Johan Thomas Lundbye's travel journal, a small, intimate object created sometime in the 1840s. Lundbye, a Danish painter and illustrator, tragically died young, at just 29 years old. The journal gives us insight into the experience of travel during this period, but it also functions as a window into the personal life of the artist. Lundbye jots down observations, expenses, and addresses, mixing the mundane with the profound. "Jordim i mes de glace and Chemonix", he writes, followed later by notes on the cost of "Omnibus og drikke" or Omnibus and drinks. Consider the politics of travel, and who had the privilege to move through space in this way. Lundbye's journal is a product of his time, but it also transcends it, speaking to the universal human experience of trying to make sense of the world around us. The journal is a reminder of the artist's presence, his thoughts, and his emotions, carefully captured on these fragile pages.
