Here is a painting called My Country III by Emily Kame Kngwarreye, I imagine made with acrylic on canvas, and maybe even a brush made of found materials. Look at these rhythmic marks, daubed on the canvas in every direction. Each mark feels so deliberate, like a note in a song. She might have been thinking about the landscape, her country, not as a fixed vista but as a living, breathing thing, always changing, always in motion. I love how the colors collide and blend - reds, yellows, blues, and greens. It's like a garden in full bloom, or a field after the rain. The paint isn't overworked, but it's applied in thin layers, letting the canvas peek through. It's almost like she's whispering secrets onto the canvas, inviting us to lean in and listen. Kngwarreye’s work reminds me of Joan Mitchell’s. Both are channeling something bigger than themselves. It's all part of this never-ending conversation between artists across time and space, inspiring each other to see the world in new ways.
