This print, titled "Intocht," was made by Jan van der Veen. The eye is immediately drawn to the two figures on horseback at the center left and center of the composition, who are framed by a large archway that imposes a sense of order on the bustling crowd. The figures are rendered in a detailed, linear style. The artist uses hatching and cross-hatching to create depth and shadow, which enlivens the two-dimensional surface. The subject is framed through a doorway, but this also becomes a metaphor for the mediation of power and the negotiation of public space. Linear ranks and the architectural structures are in contrast to the curves of the figures in the centre. Notice how the composition is structured to not only document but also to subtly comment on the dynamics of power, visibility, and representation during this period.
