The line itself varies considerably. Where is the linework most complex and what effect does this have? Editor: I see that the lines become finer and denser in areas describing fabrics and textures, almost mimicking the feel of the material. And the knights’ armor exhibits the darkest, most confident lines, communicating its weight and strength. The horses’ gear too. It gives real volume to the image. Is that correct? Curator: Precisely. Furthermore, observe how the artist utilizes the white space, the absence of ink, not merely as background, but as an active compositional element. The negative space helps to define the figures and contribute to the image's balance and clarity. Without that contrast of dark on light the visual architecture might collapse. What do you think of the romantic interpretation? Editor: I never considered that it relies heavily on contrasting forms and tones to lead the eye and give definition to each shape.
