Dick Ket drew this cluster of trees on a low hill with graphite on paper. It is a scene of quiet observation. I wonder if Ket was feeling lonely that day, sitting there drawing. The graphite marks are so tentative, like he's feeling his way through the landscape. He captures the subtle play of light and shadow on the trees, the gentle curve of the branches, and the overall stillness of the scene. It feels really intimate. Ket’s a realist with a touch of melancholy. I see this in his still lifes too. He transforms ordinary objects into emblems of human existence. He’s working within a long tradition of landscape drawing, but bringing his own sensibility to it. The simplicity of the drawing invites us to pause and reflect on our own relationship to nature, and to the world around us. It’s a reminder that sometimes the most profound experiences can be found in the quietest moments.
