This page of the book shows photographs of the German Pavilion at the 1900 Paris Exposition, taken by Lévy Fils et Cie. The images are black and white, which helps to emphasise the architectural detail in the scene. Look at the picture of the grand staircase, the carved relief figures on the banisters and walls are incredibly detailed and ornate. The monochromatic image heightens the textural effect, giving us a clear impression of the material presence of the building. It’s amazing to think about the amount of labour involved in its creation. I’m reminded of some of the early modernist photographers like Eugene Atget, who were fascinated by the textures and surfaces of the modern city. Like them, this image invites us to look closely at the built environment. There's a conversation happening here about how we see and experience the world around us.
