Curatorial notes

Curator: There’s something very grounded, yet dreamlike about Ligia Macovei’s painting, "Sicilian Fisherman's Family." The artist employs oil paints with visible impasto to capture this intimate moment. It reminds me of a forgotten family album picture, and the date of this painting is unknown. What are your first thoughts, Editor? Editor: It's fascinating! The palette, full of warm and muted tones, feels like looking at a memory. There's a sense of domesticity clashing with the potential roughness of the subjects’ profession, if that makes sense. Curator: I love how you put it. Domesticity tinged with salt and sea. Looking closer, I see not just a portrayal of daily life but a kind of iconography of family resilience. The way the young man gazes into the distance – almost a visionary stance - and the woman focused on her craft... Are they archetypes or everyday heroes? Editor: Absolutely, their clothes feel almost symbolic in their simplicity. And that child! Partially hidden, gnawing his knuckles. I almost want to say this suggests anxieties passed down the generations, you know, fear of poverty and the harshness of survival? Curator: Right. And Ligia, consciously or not, might be invoking the long, heavy history of Southern Italy with its fishing traditions and constant migrations… the layers of experience visible in those brushstrokes. I imagine that Macovei aimed to uncover this family's silent language through colour and texture. Editor: Thinking of the artist, I bet this resonated with her emotionally! Perhaps capturing these ordinary subjects elevated their quiet suffering. Art grants a certain immortality, don't you think? Curator: I couldn't agree more. It allows for that fleeting instance to stand still. Thank you for reminding me of these crucial layers to understanding such works. Editor: A pleasure. I am definitely adding Macovei to my list of underappreciated female artists. Thank you for introducing me to her perspective and her talent, today!
