Kandinsky made this artwork, titled Study on Improvisation No. 2, sometime in his life with oil paints on canvas. I just love the big, sweeping shapes and the way he isn't afraid of juxtaposing colours that seem like they shouldn't work together. It's like he's saying, "Hey, let's see what happens if I put this green next to this red!" I can imagine him, brush in hand, moving around the canvas, adding layer upon layer of paint, each stroke building upon the last. Look at the texture he creates – thick in some places, thin in others. The way he layers the colours together is pretty special. See that blue stroke cutting across the bottom, with the orange next to it? It's so simple, yet it speaks volumes. It’s like Kandinsky is in conversation with a lot of other artists from the past and the future. He creates these abstract forms and shapes that capture a feeling, an idea, or a moment in time, and invites us to engage with it. What does it make you feel? There’s no right or wrong answer.
