Here are Studies of Birds, made sometime in the late 19th or early 20th century by Niels Larsen Stevns, probably in pencil on paper. Look at the tentative lines, how they capture the essence of birds in fleeting moments. I can imagine Stevns in his studio, or maybe even outside, quickly sketching these studies. Each line feels like a gesture, a kind of shorthand for feathers, beaks, and wings. What do you think he was thinking? Was he interested in capturing their anatomy, or more about their spirit, the way they move and perch? Think about the other artists who have drawn birds over the centuries – the Renaissance masters, or even contemporary artists working today. There's an ongoing conversation, a shared fascination with capturing the beauty and wonder of the natural world. I think artists are inspired by nature and by each other. We're all just trying to figure things out, one sketch at a time.
