Curatorial notes
C.A. Lorentzen created this drawing of women in classical drapery with graphite. At its heart are the eternal figures of women, draped in classical garb, carrying a basket. These women, reminiscent of caryatids or figures from ancient friezes, evoke a sense of timelessness. Their garments, while classical, connect to an earlier era, embodying the weight of history and tradition. The sibyl figure here, derived from Michelangelo, is an interesting example. Sibyls, oracular women of ancient Greece and Rome, were believed to possess prophetic abilities, and they served as a bridge between the divine and mortal realms. Michelangelo’s figures were re-interpretations of antique ideals and this one even further. Such images touch on a deep, subconscious level, hinting at cultural memory. The gesture of carrying, the act of prophecy – all are part of a shared human experience. Each appearance is not just a copy but a re-emergence, a cyclical return of potent symbols. These figures remind us that images carry a life of their own.
