This is Henry Taunt's photograph of the porch at Sunningwell Church. It was captured in ink, sometime around the turn of the 20th century. Looking at this image, I can't help but think about light and shadow. See how the sunlight filters through the trees, casting shadows on the stone walls? I wonder if Taunt waited for the perfect moment to capture that interplay, or if it was just a lucky accident. Probably a bit of both? I imagine him setting up his camera, adjusting the focus, and waiting, patiently, for the light to be just right. I feel that in this moment, Taunt is in conversation with all the artists who have come before him. I love the way that photography allows us to see the world from a different perspective, to freeze a moment in time and examine it closely. It's a reminder that art is all about seeing and showing, and that there are endless ways to do both.
