Cornelis Vreedenburgh made this drawing of a truck with pencil on paper. The marks are quick, like he was trying to catch the truck before it drove away. You can see the process of the artist working through the image, some lines are darker, some lighter, he’s not trying to hide how it’s made. Look at the tires, they are just circles of light and dark, nothing too precious or precise. There’s a real sense of play here in how the pencil moves across the page. It makes me think about how drawing and painting are really about making marks and following where they lead, and then seeing what emerges. This piece puts me in mind of drawings by Man Ray, where the subject is almost irrelevant, it’s just about the pure joy of making marks and seeing what happens. It reminds us that art is an ongoing experiment, full of surprises and endless possibilities.
