This is an engraving titled ‘De moedige Batavieren’, or ‘The Courageous Batavians’, made in 1673 by an anonymous artist. The image is a study in contrasts, dividing the composition between the interior and the exterior. On one side, a tent houses a group of men engaged in discussion, suggesting a structured, almost theatrical space. The other side depicts a man and a woman. They are prominently positioned, perhaps indicating their central role. Both figures hold papers, possibly conveying information or decrees. The artist employs a linear style, with each line sharply defined. This engraving seems to challenge fixed meanings. Instead, it encourages a new way of thinking about space and representation, inviting us to decode its visual components and question the cultural codes informing its creation. It acts as a site of continuous interpretation.
