Gustave Moreau created this watercolor painting titled, "Voices of Evening", in 1880, a period when the symbolism movement was gaining momentum in Europe. The artwork presents three ethereal figures that hover over a dark marsh. Their androgynous qualities, combined with their divine depiction, invite us to question traditional gender roles and expectations. Moreau lived in a time of immense social change. His work is often seen as a response to the rigid constraints of 19th-century French society. Moreau's art offered an escape into a world of dreams and the subconscious. "I believe only in what I do not see and solely in what I feel." Moreau once said. Voices of Evening does not illustrate the real, instead, it dives into the depth of human emotion and imagination. It offers a space where societal norms are blurred and individual experiences are centered.
