This is a photograph by G. Hidderley, of a woman in traditional dress with a dog by the water's edge. It's a study in monochrome, almost like a faded memory, where the subtleties emerge slowly. Look at how the light catches the ridges of the stone, there's a tangible roughness, contrasting with the smooth expanse of water behind. The woman, posed in her traditional garb, becomes part of this landscape; her dark dress and the headscarf almost blend with the stones. I am drawn to the dog, who is blurred, an ambiguous form, caught mid-motion and looking like a playful brushstroke. It almost feels like Hidderley used the camera like a painter uses a brush, capturing not just what's seen, but the felt experience of a moment. This reminds me of the quiet observations in the work of someone like Agnes Martin, where the less-is-more approach invites you to really look, to feel, to imagine. Art's not about answers, it’s about the questions.
