Curatorial notes

Dorothy M. Gerhard made this drawing of a Bonnet, in what looks like graphite, on paper. The drawing is delicate and tentative, like she is feeling her way around the object. There are multiple lines and erasures, a real sense of process. I love the way the ruffles of the bonnet are suggested with these light, feathery marks. You can almost feel the softness of the fabric. The drawing is spare and minimal, and the light touch of the pencil creates a sense of intimacy. I think of the drawings of Manet, where a few simple lines can evoke a whole world. The smaller bonnet has an almost ghostly presence. The effect of the overall composition is to create a quiet, contemplative space, an invitation to slow down and reflect on the beauty of simple things. It reminds me of Agnes Martin's work, which also used minimal means to create a sense of peace and stillness.
