Editor: We're looking at Eduardo Nery's "Universo em Expansão I" from 1980, created with acrylic paint. It’s immediately striking; the vertical arrangement of circles diminishing in size gives a sense of receding depth, almost like a cosmic pathway. What do you see in this piece, what stories do these symbols evoke for you? Curator: The rhythmic descent you observed immediately triggers a sense of inevitable, almost pre-ordained sequence. In many cultures, circles represent wholeness, unity, the divine. Their diminishing scale speaks to our own limited perspective within the grand scheme of existence. The transition from yellow to orange, do you see that as a fall, or perhaps as the burning heart of creation? Editor: That’s fascinating! I initially thought of it as a kind of shrinking or fading away. But your idea of a 'burning heart of creation' makes me see it as potent energy, almost a vibrant birth. I still wonder about the empty spaces surrounding the circles. They seem charged somehow. Curator: Absolutely. Negative space often carries equal or even greater weight. Consider how cultures view the void – is it emptiness, or potential? Does this contrast invite a feeling of solitude or perhaps immense potential yet to unfold? The gradations surrounding those orbs imply forces and emanations that influence their movement. It may not be so empty at all! Editor: That’s a perspective shift for me. It makes me reconsider abstract art and how powerfully symbolic it can be. Thank you for unraveling the potential narratives contained in Nery's "Universo em Expansão I.” Curator: The pleasure was all mine. Remember, art’s enduring power lies in its ability to echo across time, resonating with symbols that shape how we see and feel.
