Abraham Meertens made this design for a room decoration with watercolor and pen around the turn of the nineteenth century. The symmetry and use of classical motifs, such as the figures of putti and classical cameos, reflect a renewed interest in the art of antiquity, and a desire to bring those classical ideals to bear on Dutch society. Here, we see how interior design was conceived as an ensemble of surface decoration and furnishings, all unified by a common classical theme. This aesthetic was promoted through institutions such as the drawing academy in Amsterdam, where Meertens worked. The visual codes and cultural references would have signaled status and taste, suggesting the owner was an educated member of the Dutch elite. The design provides a fascinating glimpse into the values and aspirations of Dutch society during a period of significant political and social change. To better understand the context, we might consult architectural pattern books, interior design manuals, and social histories of the period.
