Curator: We’re looking at “St. Michael,” a work painted around 1454 by Piero della Francesca, now held in the National Gallery in London. Editor: He seems so gentle for a warrior! Not at all like those fierce archangels you see everywhere else. His gaze is really captivating. Curator: Yes, isn't it interesting how della Francesca depicts him? Traditionally, St. Michael is an incredibly powerful figure, the leader of the heavenly hosts, conqueror of Satan… This portrayal subverts that a bit. Editor: He almost looks… dreamy? Or pensive, even. I'm not sure dreamy is how I expect an archangel to look! There’s such a humanity in his face. He seems less like an almighty figure and more like someone caught in a quiet moment of reflection. The delicate gold trim is very fine too. Curator: Absolutely. Notice the softness of his curly hair and the detailed articulation of his armor, which seems less like battle-ready gear and more like a ceremonial vestment. That circular halo is an important element; its shape representing wholeness, eternity… Divine perfection, perhaps. Editor: It is curious; the details suggest so much thought has been poured into it. It seems the painter has imagined a rather sensitive man beneath all that implied might. You can lose yourself looking at the fine detailing, the slight cracking of the oil paint... all of this suggests so much more. Curator: And the symmetry della Francesca was so fond of comes through beautifully here too. It lends the piece a sense of stability and serene monumentality. Michael is still the victor over evil, perhaps della Francesca is reminding us, the fight for good isn't about rage but quiet contemplation, spiritual discipline, and profound resolve. It feels very human. Editor: I guess in the end we all have to internalize our own demons if we want to stand any chance. So, from warrior angel to introspective guide—very cool! Curator: Yes, a compelling reminder that even archetypes evolve. Thank you.
